BC Salilita enters to ESBA membership

Basketball club “Salilita” admit to ESBA membership.

Basketball Club Salilita. Since its‘ establishment in 1991 with Apolinaras Abromavičius both as the founder and the president, Sports Club Salilita has taken part in various Lithuanian, European and World Seniors’ championships and international tournaments.
The club currently competes in three age groups of the Lithuanian Veterans Basketball League – 50+, 55+ and 60+. Throughout the years, Salilita has reached some respectable achievements – they were crowned champions of the 45+ age group in 2005 and 2007, while the 50+ team has been dominant for the last half of a decade. They won gold in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

The best players. Salilita’s roster normally consists of around 25 players throughout the three age groups with some well-known names, such as Romas Ubartas, who won gold in discus throw in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and former professional players of Vilnius Statyba: Vytenis Urba, Edmundas Narmontas, Rolandas Penikas, Stanislovas Kaulius, highlighting the list.

Since 2002, Salilita has taken part in every single European and World Championship. The club represented Lithuania in the 2002 European Championship in Athens, 2004 – in Helsinki, 2006 – in Hamburg, while the 50+ team took their first set of medals in the 2008 European Championship in Pesaro, taking silver, and followed it up with bronze medals in the World Championship in Natal (Brazil) in 2009. Salilita visited Zagreb in the 2010 European Championship and headed back to Natal in 2011. The 50+ team once again achieved a podium finish in the 2012 European Championship in Kaunas, taking second place, while the 55+ squad finished fourth.

Every November since 2006, Salilita organizes an international tournament “Vilnius”, where 18-20 teams partake in three age categories – Women’s 40+ alongside Men’s 50+ and 60+. Amongst the regular participants are teams from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad (all Russia), Riga (Latvia), Mukacheve (Ukraine), Torun (Poland), Minsk (Belarus) and Prešov (Slovakia), alongside a handful of Lithuanian teams.
